Chegou a hora dessa gente bronzeada mostrar seu valor! Hoje a partir das 7pm o V&A vai pegar fogo com o Friday Late Hot Brazil. Em uma parceria com o Braziliality, o tradicional museu londrino (meu preferido, btw) vai receber diversão e arte diretamente do país tropical.

Tonight from 7pm the V&A will catch on fire with Friday Late: Hot Brazil. In a partnership with Braziliality, the traditional London museum (my favourite, btw)  will host a night of art, culture, song and dance.

Eu acho transformar música em imagem um negócio complicado. Quando não tem letra pra dar uma ajudinha na escolha do tema então…mais difícil ainda. Por isso que eu amo quando encontro um video criativo, que consegue traduzir os sons de maneira original e completamente abstrata, como esse do argentino Esteban Diácono para o músico islandês Ólafur Arnalds .

I think turning music into image is quite complicated. When there are no lyrics to help out with the theme, it’s even harder. That’s why I love coming across a video that is able to translate sound in an original and abstract way, like this one from argentinian Esteban Diácono for Icelandic musician Ólafur Arnalds.

Arnalds recebeu o video de Diácono como parte de uma iniciativa bem interessante: ele resolveu abrir um diálogo com os fãs e incentivou-os a enviar material visual inspirado pelo seu trabalho. Os videos selecionados estão em seu site, junto com uma porrada de outros registros.

Arnalds received Diácono’s video as parte of an interesting initiative: he decided to connect with fans and encouraged them to send visual material that was inspired by his work. The selected ones are in his website, along with lots of other stuff.

A parceria deu tão certo que rendeu outro clipe para a música Slowly Comes the Light, e todo o visual da sua turnê em 2010, baseada na arte do video.

The partnership was so successful that they collaborated in another video, for Slowly Comes the Light, and all of the visuals for his 2010 tour.

E o clássico (premonitório) de Fritz Lang continua sendo fonte de inspiração para as mais diversas obras. A bola da vez é um gigantesco circuito de Hot Wheels, projeto do americano Chris Burden que levou 4 anos para ficar pronto.

And Fritz Lang’s (premonitory) classic is still a source of inspiration for several works. This time it is a giant Hot Wheels set by american artist Chris Burden, which took 4 years to build, that’s named after the expresionist masterpiece.

Com mais de 1,100 mini carrinhos a uma velocidade (em escala) de 386 km/h, Metropolis II é um emaranhado de arranha céus e vias expressas que, infelizmente, já deixou de ser cenário de ficção científica há muito tempo. Que o digam os moradores de LA, cujo museu de arte moderna, LACMA, exibe a obra por tempo indeterminado (alô galera do Coachella! ).

With over 1,100 mini cars going at 240mph (to scale), Metropolis II is a buzzing tangle of skyscrapers and freeways which, unfortunately, hasn’t been an exclusive sci-fi scenery for quite a while now – and no one knows this better than LA dwellers. The piece is on long term loan to LACMA, the city’s museum of modern art (attention Coachella crew! ).

E foi dada a largada para a nova temporada de eventos londrinos! Sabado tem a primera parada do ano (pelo menos pra mim): O artista brasileiro Ernesto Neto se junta ao físico Luiz Alberto Oliveira, à escritora e curadora Margaret Wertheim e o filosofo Éric Alliez para uma conversa sobre espaço, fronteiras, transformação e fluxo.

And the 2012 season of London events is officially open! Saturday is the first stop (at least for me): brazilian artist Ernesto Neto will join physicist Luiz Alberto Oliveira, science writer and curator Margaret Wertheim and philosopher Éric Alliez in a debate about space, frontiers, transformation and flux.

O debate faz parte de uma programação especial da Tate, que une artistas e pensadores de diferentes áreas cujas obras expandem o conceito de Topologia.  Até Junho ocorrerão vários eventos como performances, palestras e exposições. Vale a pena dar uma olhada na programação inteira (abaixo), mas de cara já dou a minha dica: O seminário Continuity/Infinity com Olafur Eliasson (de quem eu já falei por aqui).

The debate is part of a special programme at the Tate, uniting artists and academics of different fields whose works expand the concept of Topology. Until June several events like performances, talks and exhibitions will take place at the gallery. The complete program is listed below, but I can already point out the Continuity/Infinity seminar featuring Olafur Eliasson (who I’ve already mentioned here).

Em tempos de debate sobre o futuro da Cracolândia e a situação dos dependentes químicos no país, The Ninth Floor, da fotojornalista Jessica Dimmock, cai como uma luva.

It seems quite fitting to post photojournalist Jessica Dimmock‘s The Ninth Floor series as the debate over São Paulo’s failed attempts to treat the crackland problem as a social issue heats up.

Primeiro projeto da então estudante de fotografia, The Ninth Floor acompanhou de perto a vida de mais ou menos 30 viciados moradores de um apartamento com vista para a famosa 5a Avenida, em Manhattan. O proprietário original, Joe Smith, era figura conhecida da cena artsy de NY nos anos 70 e 80. Ao alugar um quarto para um jovem viciado em heroína, acabou abrindo a porteira para uma enxurrada de junkies. Ao longo dos anos os “inquilinos” foram fazendo uma limpa nas obras de arte e objetos de valor do local, transformando o então luxuoso apê em um antro de drogas e lixo. O próprio Joe Smith, também viciado, cedeu seu quarto em troca de drogas, cerveja e alguns trocados, e montou base no sofá da sala até a invasão da polícia, em 2005.

First project of a then photography student, The Ninth Floor takes a close look at the lives of about 30 addicts living in an apartment overlooking Manhattan’s famous 5th Avenue. The original proprietor, Joe Smith, was in with the art crowd in the 70′s and 80′s and years later, after renting a room to a young heroin addict, saw his flat slowly be taken over by junkies. Through the years his “tenants” stripped the place of everything valuable, reducing the once luxury apartment to a decaying pit of drugs and garbage. Joe Smith, an addict himself, gave up his room for beer, drugs and pocket money, setting up camp in the living room couch until a 2005 police raid closed the place down.

O video mostra momentos de intimidade e depoimentos de alguns desses personages durante e depois da passagem pelo 9o andar.
The video captures intimate moments and statements from some of the charactes during and after their passage through the 9th floor.

Domingo de inverno = filminho embaixo do cobertor. A tv à cabo resolveu me presentear com Monty Python and the Holy Grail, mas quem quiser algo mais forte, pode ficar com esse doc da BBC sobre um assunto que eu adoro.

Wintery Sunday night = movie under the covers. Cable TV is gracing me with Monty Python and the Holy Grail, but if you want something stronger, how about this BBC doc on one of my favourite subjects?

Dia de animações “literárias” nO’Esquema: Depois do Livro Vivo do URBe, posto aqui o novo projeto do Spike Jonze.

“Literary” animation day on O’Esquema: After URBe’s Living Book, I share with you Spike Jonze’s new project.

O curta é resultado de uma parceria entre o diretor e a designer Olympia Le-Tan: Jonze se encantou com o seu trabalho e pediu a ela uma capa bordada de ‘O Apanhador no Campo de Centeio’ para a sua parede. Olympia, que não é boba, pediu em troca um filme. Assim nasceu Mourir Auprès de Toi (Morrer ao Seu Lado), história de amor tragicômica com um toque de sacanagem passada em uma livraria, entre capas de edições raras.

The short film is a collaboration between the director and hadbag designer Olympia Le-Tan: when Jonze fell in love with her work and asked for a cover of ‘The Catcher in the Rye’ for his wall, cheeky Olympia asked for a film in return. So was born ‘Mourir Auprès de Toi’ (To Die By Your Side), a tragicomic lovestory that takes place in a bookshop amidst rare first edition book covers.
