Mais uma dos gênios do Don’t Panic. Dessa vez o alvo foi o Kettling – tática queridinha da polícia britânica para dissipar protestos. A prática extremamente controversa consiste em formar um cordão de policiais em torno do grupo, impedindo que qualquer indivíduo entre ou saia. Qualquer um mesmo – manifestante ou não. A duração do isolamento varia (durante os protestos estudantis ano passado foram mais de 10 horas), e a tática nada mais é do que uma maneira de deixar as pessoas nervosas e incitar violência, para justificar o uso da mesma pela polícia. Não é a toa que o nome faz referência a como uma chaleira, kettle, contém o vapor quente.

Another genius stunt from the Don’t Panic crew. This time their target was the controversial (and London Met favourite) Kettling – a scare tactic used by police to dissipate protests. By isolating the group with cordons of police officers, they stop anyone, and I do mean anyone – protester or unlucky bystander – from entering or leaving the area for as long as they wish (last year’s student protesters were kettled for more than 10 hours). The tactic, which gets its name from the way a kettle contains heat and vapor, is a cheap shot at getting people riled up, so they can justify the use of violence.

Posso dizer por experiência própria – o comportamento dos oficiais que formam o cordão é de fazer o sangue ferver – dá nojo. Como um deles admite no video: “vocês estão tentando rodear as pessoas, e isso está deixando elas nervosas e irritadas”. Pois é seu polícia…entendeu agora?

During the first day of the Occupy LSX I ended up being kettled when the police, in front of us and inviting people to step in without letting them know they wouldn’t be able to leave, decided to expand the circle without notice. I can honestly say the attitude of the officers who make up the isolation cordon can drive anyone mad – completely disgusting. As one of the officers in the video admits: “you’re trying to encircle them and that is getting on people’s nerves and winding them up”. Yeah officer…get it?

Parte do meu fascínio por qualquer tipo de arte está em imaginar o processo, o trabalho que deu pra chegar naquela peça que vemos exposta. E é exatamente esse processo um dos grandes méritos de Qaeda Quality Question Quickly Quickly Quiet, da inglêsa Lenka Clayton. Nele a artista picota o famoso discurso de George W Bush sobre o “Eixo do Mal”, colocando em ordem alfabética todas as 4.100 palavras.

O filme é uma brilhante dissecação da retórica política. Fica evidente o quanto as palavras, quando pensadas juntas e com o objetivo de emocionar, transcendem seus significados individuais tornando-se, de uma certa forma, reféns do todo. Listadas assim, desconexas (ainda que o acaso ajude com alguns encaixes perfeitos como “always,America”), ficam bem mais literais e fortes, revelando a essência por trás de todo o bla bla bla. A repetição descarada de bombas de efeito moral como “Afeganistão”,”terror”, “terroristas”, “ameaças” e “armas” dá o tom tragicômico dessa espécie de raio-x de um dos maiores circos políticos da história.

Part of my fascination for any artwork is imagining the process, the labour behind the final piece we see exhibited. And this is one of the biggest merits of Lenka Clayton’s Qaeda Quality Question Quickly Quickly Quiet, an alphabetically ordered rearrangement of all 4,100 words in George W Bush’s famous “Axis of Evil” speech.

The film is a brilliant dissection of political rhetoric. It makes evident how words, when grouped with the goal of stirring up emotion, transcend their individual meanings thus becoming sort of hostages to the whole. When listed like this, disconnected (although chance does promote some happy accidents like “always,America”), they become much more literal and strong, revealing the essence behind all the mumbo jumbo. The shameless repetition of verbal scare tactics like “Afghanistan”, “terror”, “terrorists”,”threats” and “weapons” sets the tragicomic tone of this X-Ray of one of the biggest political circuses in history.

Quem passar por SP até o dia 15 de Julho não pode perder a expo do Antony Gormley! O inglês é famoso por explorar o espaço ocupado pelo corpo com esculturas humanas em tamanho real, usando como molde ele mesmo (a instalação da obra Event Horizons chamou atenção e deu um susto nos paulistas).

Those in São Paulo until the 15th of July can’t miss Antony Gormley’s exhibition! The british artist is famous for his exploration of body space through life-size sculptures molded after himself  (already in the set up his work Event Horizons gave people in SP a scare).

Apesar de muitos inglêses implicarem com o artista “egocêntrico” e considerarem sua obra “repetitiva” (palavras deles), eu particularmente adoro como ele desconstrói a figura humana de diferentes maneiras. Talvez por não ser muito fã de escultura a qualidade concreta, quase gráfica, das suas formas me agrade, sei la.

Despite accusations by some British people of  being egocentric or his work too repetitive (their words, not mine), I’m quite fond of the way he deconstructs the human figure in different ways. Maybe because I’m not the biggest sculpture fan, the concrete, almost graphic, quality of his forms appeals to me.

A mostra se divide entre dois locais: no CCBB está em cartaz Corpos Presentes (em inglês chama-se Still Being que, traduzindo literalmente, pode significar “ainda sendo” e também “ser imóvel”). Além dos homenzinhos nos topos dos prédios estão expostas também Amazonian Fields (feita pra ECO-92), Critical Mass e Breathing Room, obra que eu pude conferir ao vivo e postei aqui há um tempo atrás (daquelas sacadas simples, mas de tirar o fôlego e colocar um sorriso bobo no rosto).

The exhibition is divided among two locations: in CCBB is Still Being, with the little iron men on top of buildings plus Amazonian Fields (created for the Rio 92 UN Summit), Critical Mass and Breathing Room, which I saw in London and wrote about a while back (one of those simple yet awe inspiring concepts, which cause a lasting smile).

Inspirada pela recente visita à expo do Jeremy Deller, uma das obras mais legais desse artista britânico cujo olhar interessado, crítico e bem humorado transforma em arte qualquer coisa à sua volta.

Inspired by a recent visit to Jeremy Deller‘s exhibition, I share here one of the most interesting pieces by this british artist with the ability to make art out of anything his interested, critical and humorous eye falls on.

Acid Brass faz um link inusitado entre as bandas de metais (brass bands) surgidas no século 19 e o acid house do final do século 20. Apesar de surgida em um pub, a idéia de botar uma banda tradicional para tocar hits dos clubs imediatamente trouxe vàrias referências à mente e Deller fez questão de não deixar aquilo morrer alí.

Acid Brass links 19th century brass bands to late 20th century acid house. The ideia to have a traditional brass band playing club anthems was born in a pub and right then and there Deller started jotting down references and images that came to mind.

A partir disso surgiu o infográfico abaixo, onde ele mostra como a industrialização, embates referentes à políticas trabalhistas, a região norte da inglaterra e, claro, outros gêneros musicais, são pontos de convergência entre os dois.

From those scribbles was born the chart below, where labour disputes, north England, industrialization and, of course, other musical genres, create links between both worlds.

A História do Mundo // The History of the World (1997)

O negócio deu tão certo que Acid Brass passou por museus super conceituados (Tate Modern e Louvre) e também rodou vários festivais europeus. Abaixo, uma base de comparação pra entender o trabalho dos músicos da Fairey Band.

The project was so successfull that Acid Brass toured several well known museums and music festivals throughout Europe.

And the subject of animal testing for the cosmetics industry is stil going strong – here’s an article I wrote for online magazine Pittacos.

Belíssima animação dos artistas Emilski e Nick Duggins pro single da dupla Fracture & Neptune. Adorei os grafismos meio handmade e o clima “analógico”, indo na contramão do “ultra-futurismo” cheio de referências metálicas e tóxicas ou dos ambientes urbanos sujos e grafitados, os maiores clichês visuais do drum n’ bass.

Great animation by artists Emilski and Nick Duggins for Customtone, by Fracture & Neptune. Loved the kinda handmade graphics and the “analogue” mood going against the usual “ultra-futuristic” metalic/toxic references or the urban gritty look, two major visual clichés when it comes to drum n’ bass.

Aliás o Astrophonica, selo da dupla, parece gostar mesmo dessa onda artesanal – junto com o mesmo Emilski fizeram uma edição limitada de discos customizados. Curti.

It seems like Astrophonica, Fracture and Neptune’s label, has a thing for handcraft – again with Emilsky they did this limited edition customised vinyls. Nice.

A excelente campanha da Lush exigindo o fim de testes em animais pela indústria de cosméticos atingiu seu auge de maneira brilhante nessa quarta feira. Em sua maior e mais movimentada loja Londrina, a marca promoveu uma performance chocante retratando o horror vivido por milhares de animais em laboratórios no mundo inteiro. A corajosa artista e ativista (e vegana) Jacqueline Traides fez papel de cobaia e durante 10 horas se submeteu a todo tipo de tortura – algumas encenadas, outras bem reais. Apesar de violentos, os atos praticados em Jacqueline ainda não chegam aos pés da realidade.

Lush’s excellent campaign against animal testing in the cosmetics industry reached its brilliant high point this Wednesday. Their busy Regent Street flaship store was the stage for a shocking performance depicting the horrors of animal testing. The brave performer and activist (and vegan) Jacqueline Traides acted as guinea pig and endured a 10 hour torture session – some fake, some quite real. Although quite harsh, the violence suffered by Jaqueline isn’t nearly as brutal as the reality of what goes on behind closed doors in laboratories worldwide.

Os dados todo mundo já sabe, já ouviu alguma vez, mas nada como ver ao vivo e, melhor ainda, em um ser da mesma espécie, para a emoção bater e a consciência pesar. Marcas como a Lush já provaram que é possível fazer produtos de alta qualidade sem necessidade alguma de testes em animais. Então a pergunta é: porque diabos isso continua acontecendo? Uma das respostas é a simples falta de pressão popular. O que os olhos não veem, o coração não sente, e assim caminha a humanidade com seus supérfluos de primeira necessidade. Então tá, agora tá aí escancarado e não da mais pra usar a desculpa do ‘ninguém sabe ninguém viu’ – cabe a nós dar um basta a esse absurdo!

Everyone’s heard the data, but nothing like seeing it live and, better yet, on one of our own, to stir up emotion and weigh down the conscience. Brands like Lush have already proven that animal testing is not necessary for the production of great quality products. So why does it go on? One of the answers might be the simple lack of public pressure. Out of sight, out of mind – and so we go on with our superficial basic needs. So now it’s there, in your face, no more excuses: it’s up to us to change this picture!

Um bom começo, além da assinatura da petição, é dar uma olhada nessas listas de empresas que empresas que testam e empresas que não testam seus produtos em animais – e já aviso logo, é assustador o número de grandes marcas que o fazem. Mas nada que não possa ser compensado na outra – eu to muito feliz com meu sabonete Natura, meu perfume Carolina Herrera, meus esmaltes da Urban Decay, minhas makes e cremes da Body Shop e meu hidratante Jason.  A verdade é que ninguém vai morrer ao trocar um rímel por outro, um esmalte vermelho X por um esmalte vermelho Y, mas os animais sim, esses morrem todos os dias por conta das nossas escolhas.

A good start, after signing the petition, is to look at these lists of companies that test their products on animals, and companies that don’t – and I have to say, the number of big brands that do it is alarming. But nothing that can’t be compensated on the other one – I for one am very happy with my Carolina Herrera perfume, my Urban Decay nail polishes, my creams and makeups from The Body Shop and my Jason moisturizer. The truth is, no one will die from exchanging one mascara for the other, red nail polish X for red nail polish Y, but the animals will.

Motivada por uma pequenininha que não tava querendo comer, posto aqui algumas das delícias do Weelicious, um site super legal de receitas para crianças de todas as idades (todas meeesmo – já to com a lista do mercado pronta pra tentar a primeira!). Uma mãozinha pras mamães e papais manterem a criatividade culinária e o interesse dos filhotes,  as refeições e lanches do site dão de mil em qualquer fast food ou comida industrializada (e são super simples: dá até pra chamar os pequenos pra ajudarem no preparo). Fora que os pratos são super coloridos e fofinhos, pra comer com os olhos e driblar qualquer manha!

Motivated by a little one who wasn’t so keen on eating today, I share with you some recipes from Weelicious, a cool site with recipes for kids of all ages (and I do mean all ages: I have the market list ready for my first attempt!). A helping hand for mums and dads who want to keep cooking creative and the kids interested (recipes are so simple, you can even cook together). Not only are the dishes and snacks healthier and defnitely tastier than any fast or industrialised food, they’re also beautiful, leaving no room for tantrums.

Confesso que sou ruim de planejar viagens, então adoro quando o universo conspira a meu favor e eu descubro programas legais rolando durante a trip. A boa surpresa de Berlim foi o festival de animação Pictoplasma. Focado em personagens, o evento reúne feras da área, mostrando o espaço enorme que essas criaturas ocupam na arte contemporânea e a sua importância na linguagem visual atual, em diversos meios e formatos.

I have to confess I’m not the best planner when it comes to travelling, so I love when the stars align and something very cool is happening where I am. This time in Berlin the lucky surprise was the Pictoplasma Festival. Focusing on character animation, the event brings together a team of allstars of the field, showing just how big a space these creatures occupy in contemporary art and their importance in today’s visual language, in distinct media and formats.

As atividades se dividiam entre dois QG’s principais: no espaço .HBC ficava o Character Lab, onde alguns dos artistas participantes dividiam suas técnicas com o público atráves de workshops variados (de xilogravura a vidro assoprado a ilustração 3D), enquanto outros apresentavam seus trabalhos em meio a um bate papo. No cinema Babylon (super perto) rolavam as palestras principais, com nomes de destaque como Gary Baseman, Julia Pott e Joel Trussel entre outros, e as sessões de curtas – para noooooooosa alegria (serviu pra matar um pouco da saudade do Anima Mundi – uma das poucas coisas que Londres ainda não me oferece é um festival de animação foda como o nosso). Abaixo, alguns dos meus preferidos:

The activities were divided among two HQ’s: the .HBC space was home to the Character Lab where some participating artists shared their techniques in workshops (from linocut to blown glass to 3D illustration), while others introduced their work in small talks and presentations. A few blocks away, Babylon cinema hosted not only the main conference lectures, featuring well known artists like Gary Baseman, Julia Pott and Joel Trussel among many others, but also the animated shorts programme (which I couldn’t get enough of, since I still haven’t found a London equivalent to top-notch brazilian animation festival Anima Mundi). Here are some of my favourites:

I was laughing out loud when this came on – totally unexpected. This freakish “ode to technologies past” called Daddy’s Little Doll is part of a project called Little Citizen, created by some pretty well known brazilian musicians.

Além disso tudo ainda rolavam várias exposições ligadas ao festival, espalhadas por galerias da area. Um mapinha esperto mostrava a rota percorrendo todas e, pra não ter chance de se perder mesmo, do lado de fora de cada galeria participante uma bandeirinha fluorescente identificava o local. Segue um gostinho…

On top of it all, several local galleries had exhibitions related to the festival. A map of the Character Walk highlighted the area and traced the best route going through all of them. And to avoid all chances of getting lost, each participating gallery had a little fluorescent flag hanging outside. Here’s a little taste…

Que saudade que eu tava de uma imersão intensa nesse mundo nonsense, colorido, mezzo demente e hiper lúdico… A primeira impressão foi ótima e com certeza ficarei de olho nos projetos futuros do pessoal do Pictoplasma, torcendo pra uma versão Londrina!
Oh how I missed a full imersion in this nonsense, colorful, kinda sick and hyper playful world! This was quite a first impression and I’ll definitely be keeping a lookout for Pictoplasma’s fututre projects – and hoping for a London edition.

O video faz parte do Ted-Ed, um braço educativo to famoso TED, em parceria com o biólogo marinho (e produtor do filme), Tierney Thys. Para os mais interessados, tem um Q&A com ele falando sobre o video aqui.

The video is a partnership between Ted-Ed, the educational branch of well known TED, and marine biologist Tierney Thys (who also produced the film). For those iterested, a Q&A with him is available here.

Já as imagens são do Plankton Chronicles: um projeto francês que utiliza equipamento de última geração para fazer registros lindíssimos desse microcosmo subaquático. Para os que sempre me perguntam que raios arte e ciência tem a ver uma com a outra, esse projeto é uma boa resposta.

The images were shot by the Plankton Chronicles crew: a french project using high class equipment to produce beautiful records of this subaquatic microcosm. For those who keep asking me what the hell have art and science got to do with each other, this is a good example.
